January 29 marked Amelia Bedelia’s 50th birthday. Most of Fordham Bedford Academy’s students had never heard of the fictional character before. As the morning announcers announced the special birthday news, students came up throughout the day and asked if Amelia Bedelia was coming in for an author visit.  I quickly explained she was a book character and in true librarian form, I dressed up as Amelia Bedelia. For three days, 1st and 2nd graders celebrated by listening to read alouds, pinning the pie on Amelia’s hands, making their own Amelia Bedelia hats and of course by eating her famous homemade goods on tablecloths with Amelia’s handprints all over them. There is nothing like hands on learning in order to internalize the character and have a better sense of her character traits. The kids had a ball, should I say a good time.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
