The American Dairy Association kindly rewarded two 5th grade P.S. 54 students that have been active in leading Fuel Up To Play 60. Laynie Santana and Melvin Cruz were awarded jerseys and recognized pre-game at the Giants vs. Seahawks game. Both students were vital in the success of P.S. 54 becoming a touchdown school again for the 2013-2014 school year. Laynie has been actively introducing physical activity cards and breaks to the classes at every grade level. Not one bit nervous, she makes a class presentation that includes a video, speech and modeling of different poses. This gives teachers an idea of how to run the physical activity breaks and students know how to do different poses correctly. Melvin Cruz has been a student leader in informing scholars about Fuel Up to Play 60 and actively assisting sign up. Many students have relatively little computer experience and Melvin guides them through the sign up and play process. Congratulations to Laynie and Melvin for being leaders and for being recognized in this once in a lifetime opportunity!!!
The P.S. 54 learning community was privileged to have internationally acclaimed award winning author/illustrator Dan Yaccarino visit and give three presentations to students. Dan Yaccarino has sold over 1.5 million books and has received the Bologna Ragazzi, The New York Time 10 Best Illustrated, ALA Notable and the Parents Choice Awards. The students immediately recognized Oswald, an animated cartoon series from Nick Jr., that Dan Yaccarino creates. It was difficult keeping incredibly excited students quiet. Children were captivated by Dan’s ability to stay focused and follow his childhood dream of art and telling stories. He delivered a very inspirational message to adults and children alike when he simply stated that we need to believe in ourselves and persist, even though we may face rejection. Children related to Dan through his childhood pictures and stories. The vivid artwork jumped off the Smartboard and had children constantly a buzz. Dan Yaccarino’s presentation was incredibly positive and powerful. Teachers and students were highly impressed with the multi-layered slide show, the numerous art, books, and book trailers presented. Scholars and teachers crowded the author after the Q & A to ask more questions, get books signed and infuse his inspiration into their own dreams of being creative. Children later requested the school library order all the other Yaccarino books shown. Teachers said is awed tones, “He’s the best author/illustrator visit we’ve ever had!!!” Dan Yaccarino is without a doubt a must have visit!!!

Hello everyone. Recently my school had a Garden to Cafe event. The Garden to Cafe is basically when a special cook comes in and cooks up something yummy for everyone. Almost all ingredients came from the school’s garden crops. The librarian reached out to a special division in NYC DOE and got the chef to come because it would a nice treat for the school and for students to be able to taste new and exciting crops we actually planted. Not only everyone who worked hard on the garden with me, but the whole school got to taste test a salad and pesto pasta. It was a chilly day out. We all got to put our jackets and celebrate in the garden. It was also “National Take Your Parent to Lunch Day” and we had several parents come out to show their support for the garden and education. Way to go guys!!! I never knew that gardens and healthy eating build community. The lunch man even came up from the downstairs cafeteria to see what was going on! So I just wanted to inform you about all the special things we are doing here at P.S. 54. And another thing,I need something from you all…… please eat at least 3 fruits a day and remember to eat healthy. Signing off till next time.
